I have searched some of the forums and haven't found discussions on this topic. I didn't know if it had been brought to the neighborhood's attention or not.

First Baptist Church of New Orleans on Canal Blvd is proposing a 65 x 25 foot sign to go by the interstate near the train overpass at the City Park/ Metairie Road exit. The structure's design itself is nice and I have no opposition to the church having a sign. However, the design includes (2) 16 x 6 foot electronic message boards (similar to LCD screens). I really feel this is inappropriate for the neighborhood. It's similar to having a downtown arena sign in the Lakeview/Midcity neighborhood. Tomorrow is the hearing where they will vote on it and the church has indicated it feels confident that without any neighborhood opposition, it will be passed. This has been in the works for a while but no one I have spoken to on the Mid City Neighborhood Association or in the Lakeview neighborhood seemed to know anything about it.

Thanks for your time and please, if you do have any concerns, questions, or opposition to this sign, consider attending tomorrows meeting. I'm assuming it is a City Counsil meeting?. Thanks.

Thanks for the update, it is the first I have heard of it also.

I hope they reconsider the LCD signs, this isn't Vegas.

I also posted this message on the NOLA.COM MID CITY forum and this was the response from the church. I also contacted our council reps. office and they confirmed that the sign's final design was not directly in vote and thus will be able to be addressed in the future before its possible construction.

As leader of the Building Design Team of First Baptist Church, I wanted to all of you know that today's hearing does not involve a sign. The provisos for the relocation of the cell tower (something that was on the property prior to our building our church facility) specifically exclude a sign. We do not plan on requesting a sign today. We are, however, interested in a sign as our large property has almost 700 feet of frontage on the interstate without any permanent identification of the building. A sign appropriate to the scale of our property and fitting in the landscape will better enable us to communicate our identity and expand Christ's ministry in New Orleans. We have been working openly with our neighbors and their association (Lakeview Civic Improvement Association Zoning Committee) to design a sign and landscape that is a positive addition to the area. If you are interested in learning more about our plans, you may contact me at 523.6021. I would be happy to share with you the current design (mind you, not being presented today). Thank you.
