It’s been too long since my first and only newsletter written in April 2006. At that time the big concern in Lakeview was and still is looting or burglaries. Another issue was dealing with squatters, on your end and on mine. I recommended that residences needed to be secured and valuables be taken out. This would alleviate some of the looting if not all, and push the squatters away as well. I also recommended that if your residence had electricity place exterior lighting, preferably with a motion sensor, at several locations on your property, and to get an alarm system installed if at all practical. With that in mind many residents and home owners did just that.
In 2006, officers working the Lakeview Crime Prevention District arrested more than 1200 individuals and wrote nearly 2300 traffic citations. The majority of arrest consisted of fugitive warrants, municipal or city arrests, and traffic arrests. The municipal or city arrests consisted of mostly trespassing, but were also for individuals drunk in public, having municipal attachments for missing court, and illegal dumping. We even cited individuals for placing advertisement signs on public property.
In 2006, the Lakeview Crime Prevention District had 341 UCR,s. A UCR, Uniformed Crime Reporting, are crimes that fall under the following categories: murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, automobile burglary, theft, and automobile theft. These crimes are reported to the Federal Government for data collection. These same crimes are used by the New Orleans Police Department to track crimes that are reported, and to deploy personnel as necessary. The 341 UCR’s in 2006 were slightly up from the 327 UCR’s reported in 2005. The two areas of concern for 2006 were burglaries and thefts.
In 2007, the concerns are the same with burglaries and thefts being our major problems. There are still a lot of residences unsecured, allowing burglars and thieves the opportunity to walk right into a residence and take what he wants. Once they get into a neighborhood they branch out until they are caught or have taken everything they could possibly get. The item of choice for these guys, copper!
Prior to August 28th, 2005, if there was a stranger in the neighborhood the police would get a call. Now a stranger in the neighborhood is common. It is extremely hard for anyone these days to determine if an individual, or a group of individuals, is working, casing the area, or just flat out stealing. And although we do not have the population in Lakeview we still have the property. Policing today is much more difficult in this community today than it was in 2005, but we are not giving up! Officers working the Lakeview Crime Prevention District are looking for burglars, thieves, and illegal dumpers both on public property as well as private property. We are dealing with the businesses that are illegally placing signs on neutral grounds, utility poles, and trees on public property. We are also dealing with the graffiti artists that have decided to establish themselves in Lakeview. We are trying to get your quality of life back by dealing with the large trucks parking on private property at night as well as on the neutral grounds. We are making progress with moving the trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment parked in neighborhoods that have been progressing at a rapid pace. Besides all of this we are responding to emergency calls in an attempt to back up the Third District. As a result and because we only cover the Lakeview area we normally beat the Third District to the call.
With all of this in mind we, the officers working the Lakeview Crime Prevention District, need your help. We need you to board up and secure your residence. We need you to light your residence at night if you have electricity. We need FEMA trailers that are no longer used or needed to be removed so that we can see your house. We need you to take a few minutes when you are driving through Lakeview to look for suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities. We want you to call 911 and report any and all suspicious activity so that we can catch these guys. The only bad call is the one we don’t receive.
I am currently compiling an e-mail list so that I can forward those interested with up to date crime information. This information will consist of any crime reported as well as individuals or vehicles that we are actively looking for. E-mail addresses sent to me will not be shared with anyone else and will be used solely for the purpose of crime prevention in Lakeview. My e-mail address is

, and my cell number is (504) 258-2391. If you have an emergency do not call me, call 911.
In closing, my goal and the goal of all the officers working the Lakeview Crime Prevention District for 2007 is to reduce crime. With your help and assistance this can be done.
