Dear Fellow Lakeview residents, I wanted to share with you a problem with the drains at the intersection of General Haig and Brooks St. I have written the same letter to Councilperson Midura, Thomas, and Fielkow. If you live near me, please write a similar letter or feel free to copy this one and send it to them. Hopefully we can get something done.
Thank you,
Tina

Dear Councilmember Ms. Shelley Midura,
I am writing to you today to request your assistance in getting a nuisance problem taken care of. My neighbors and I have been calling city departments and writing letters for more than a year trying to get this problem resolved.
The problem is the drains on the 5900 and 5800 blocks of General Haig St, at the intersection of Brooks St. in Lakeview. These drains did not work properly before Hurricane Katrina and are in even worse shape now!
Anytime it rains, the intersection I described above becomes a LAKE/SWAMP. The water will stand for days. In fact, there has not been a day without standing water in the street in front of & across the street from my house at 5902/5904 General Haig St. The drain on the side of my house facing Brooks street does not function properly either. Not only is this a nuisance, it is a health hazard as well. It is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. The mailman must go through this water when he delivers my mail. It is impossible to park in front of the house.
The drain in front on my house on General Haig St. has sunk to the point that it is below the street. It was not quite this low before Hurricane Katrina. I believe the installation of a new fire hydrant and the FEMA clean-up caused the drain to sink further. This drain needs to be reinstalled at a proper height to allow water to drain off of the street. I have tried using the Public Works website to request that the problem be fixed; however, the download of the request form is not working.
Another issue, slightly less pressing is the damage done to Brooks street (at the intersection of General Haig St.) by the FEMA vehicles and their bobcats. They literally moved the pavement right off of the street and therefore the street is not passable in that section. This also needs to be addressed.
I understand that the city is having financial difficulties and that my problem and the problem of my neighbors is one of many. However, we elected you for a reason and that is because we believed in your ability to get things done for us in Lakeview. Please let me know how you are going to get our street drainage problem fixed and when it will be done.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Tina Turnbull
